    • The AirportIreland West Airport Knock (formerly known as Knock Airport) is one of the great against-the-odds success stories of modern Ireland. The idea of an airport for the Knock region was mooted as early as 1935, and Father James Horan was part of a delegation from the Knock Development Association which, during the 1960s, sought in vain an airstrip to cater for pilgrims. When the project got going in the wake of Pope John Paul II‘s visit to Knock in 1979, it was much derided, called a ‘white elephant’ and was the subject of much political controversy. The proposal got government backing in 1980, and the first sod was cut by Minister for Transport Albert Reynolds the following year, but many obstacles had to be overcome before the first commercial flights took off in 1985. The airport was officially opened in May 1986, months before Monsignor Horan, the airport’s driving force, died in Lourdes. Within two years, annual passengers numbers had exceeded 100,000, and that figure had doubled by the turn of the century. The first snow and ski charters took off from the airport in 2004, and the airport reached the milestone of over half a million annual passengers the…
    • Mgr James HoranThe driving force behind the establishment of the airport, James Horan (1911-1986) was born in Tooreen, in the parish of Partry, in west County Mayo, the son of a farmer and tradesman. He was the eldest of seven children – four girls and three boys. He attended primary school in Partry and won a scholarship to St Jarlath’s Diocesan College in Tuam, County Galway. In 1929, he went to Maynooth College to train for the priesthood, and was ordained in 1936. He spent three years in Glasgow, in the parish of Dumbarton, and in 1939, he returned home to become Chaplain to the Franciscan monastery in Ballyglunin, in the Archdiocese of Tuam. After only two months there, he was transferred to Tiernea in the parish of Carraroe in County Galway, where he became fluent in the Irish language. In 1944 he returned to his native Mayo, working as a curate in Tooreen in the parish of Aghamore. He was responsible for the introduction of electricity to the area, and was probably best known at that time as the promoter of Tooreen Hall. After 14 years in Tooreen, Fr Horan left in July 1959 to go to his next parish, Cloonfad.…

Standing ovations!

Posted on November 28th, 2010 by Terry Reilly

Standing ovations greeted the premiere performances of on On a Wing and A Prayer- The musical in The Royal Theatre Castlebar, Co Mayo (Nov 25 to 27). Despite blinding snow and icy conditions, the impressive theatre, which accommodates 2,000 people, was packed, and the Mayo Roscommon Hospice received all monies from the performances.

There were 125 actors/singers/dancers of all ages on the stage, 99 per cent of whom were amateurs, but ever so professional. The singing was out of the top drawer, the music unlifting and unspiring as the story of Monsignor James Horan unwound in colourful detail  over  almost 2 and a half hours.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, people travelled from all over the country, from surrounding counties, from Dublin,  from the north of Ireland and from England for the premiere.

The attendance on various nights included former Government minister Padraig Flynn and airport builder Frank Harrington and family members of the Horan family, and also family members of the team who formed the initial Board of Connaugh Regional Airport, later Horan International Airport, now called Ireland West Airport Knock, and perhaps more commonly known as Knock Airport.

People have been ringing n to the local radio station, Mid West Radio, asking when will be show be perfomed again, if it is going to Dublin, to England or America?  No decisions have been taken on  future dates/locations…first everyone will enjoy a well earned rest!  Terry Reilly, the creator and co-writer with Tommy Marren, said the response of the public was most heartening, and he had been inundated with telephone calls from well -wishers.

On final night on stage  Terry Reilly said he was humbled at the magnificence of the cast and production, and humbled by the support from the general public, and said that though Ireland was going through a tough economic phase, the resilience of the people would see us through, as they had when Monsignor James Horan was building his airport in the dark and dreary 1980s.

Tommy Marren, who also produced the show and was the narrator, said it had been an amazing journey over many months of auditions and rehearsals, and he too paid tribute to the cast and backstage crew, designers, and the many who had worked behind the scenes. Special tribute was accorded to Lavinia Slater-Gilmartin, the musical director, who worked wonders to ensure a musically brilliant and entertaining show.

To mark their input presentations were made by Ollie Rouse (who played the older Monsignor Horan so brilliantly) on behalf of the cast to Terry Reilly, Tommy Marren, Lavinia Slater-Gilmartin and Cynthia Clampett, Co-Ordinator, CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice and who also played Dame Judy Coyne in the show. A  number of other presentations were also made to members of the cast and backstage crew, including Eileen Slevin who did a brilliant job as set designer. See cast list under Production & Cast .

Mayo Man of the Year Joe Kennedy, who was Chief Patron of the show, was unstinting in his praise of  the production. The attendance included a visiting party under the Peace 111 initiative from Banbridge, Co Down, and from Belfast, who were brought to the show by Sean and Peggy Owens of the Banada (Co Sligo) Development Agency.

Also in the attendance was former Mayo All-Ireland winner of 1950/51  Fr Peter Quinn, Liam Scollan, Joe Gilmore and staff from Ireland West Airport; Peter Hynes, Mayo County Manager;  Chairperson of the Western Development Commission,  Michael Farrell; Sean Hannick,  Chair Council for the West, Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam, V Rev Joseph Quinn, PP Knock, and members of the regional media, members of the Mayo Associaiton in Dublin.

Master of Ceremonies each night was the popular Gerry Glennon, of Mid West Radio.

The story of how a west of Ireland priest convinced the Irish government to build an airport in the middle of a disadvantaged, depopulated region in East Mayo when the country was in dire financial straits is to be retold later this year when ‘On A Wing and a Prayer-The Musical’ takes to the stage for its premiere at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Author Terry Reilly, who wrote the best-selling book On A Wing and a Prayer, has adapted the work in association with Tommy Marren for a stage production that will bring to life the many herculean undertakings and amazing achievements of Monsignor James Horan, parish priest of Knock, told in word and song.

Proceeds from the November shows will go to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice which must raise in excess of 1 million euro each year through donations and fundraising efforts to maintain its palliative care service in the two counties. Read More

Song-writing legend visits rehearsals

Legendary Nashville-based songwriter Rory Bourke was amazed to see so many members of the cast assembled on the night of the October Bank Holiday and getting on with rehearsals under the direction of Director Tommy Marren and Musical Director Lavinia Gilmartin.
The entire room sang Lion of Partry, the song Rory wrote with Terry Reilly for the show, and the visitor was suitably impressed. “What great voices, what great people,” he said when he addressed the gathering.
This Hall of Fame tinsmith with deep Mayo roots has lived all his life in the music business and has seen and worked with or written songs for some of the greatest singers to come out of Nashville, including Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Don Williams, Randy Travis, Ann Murray, Josh Turner (who has recorded Rory’s song as his latest single), and many, many more.
His people left Ballina during the Great Famine, and he grew up in a household in Ohio that was never allowed to forget their Irishness, their heritage, their sense of place.
Back to trace some of his roots with his wife Rita, he was delighted to be able to attend rehearsals and enthralled to hear that all the directors and cast are volunteering their services to bring On Wing and A Prayer-The Musical to the stage for three nights in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice. (see dates and links to buy tickets).  They were warmly welcomed by Cynthia Clampett, CEO of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice, who also plays the part of Dame Judy Coyne in the show.
Rory Bourke videoed the rehearsals and told the Musical’s creator Terry Reilly afterwards that he would bring it back with immense pride to Nashville and looked forward to showing it to his friends.
He wished the show every success and said he very much looked forward to returning to Ballina again to meet his many cousins in the area.
Tickets are selling exceptionally well for the show which is expected to perform before capacity attendances.

Mrs Coyne and her husband Judge Liam Coyne were instrumental in reviving interest in Knock Shrine.
